Frequently Asked Questions

Here's What You Might Be Thinking

Real answers to the questions most investors have before they book a call.

How are you different from my current advisor?
Most firms either do financial planning and outsource the investing, or they manage money but don't really do the planning. We do both, in-house, on the same team. Our investment team hand-picks every position in your portfolio and actively manages it, while our planning team coordinates it with the rest of your financial life.
What's the minimum to work with you?
$500,000 in investable assets. Our average client has around $1.1 million. We work with people who are looking for a more thoughtful approach, where their investments are actively managed and they have a holistic financial plan all under one roof.
How are you different from Vanguard, Schwab, or a big-firm advisor?
The big firms typically build passive portfolios out of index funds and mutual funds. We actively manage concentrated portfolios of 30-40 individual stocks, researched in-house and adjusted as markets change. You also get a dedicated wealth manager you can reach directly, not a call center or a junior rep.
How are you actually managing my portfolio? Is it active or passive?
It's actively managed. Our investment team builds portfolios of 30-40 individual stocks we've researched ourselves. We monitor positions daily, adjust allocations based on valuation and market conditions, and use trailing stops and other tools to manage downside risk. We don't just rebalance once a year and call it a day.
How do you handle market downturns?
We can't predict markets, and we won't pretend to. What we can do is actively manage downside risk: monitor valuations daily, use trailing stops, reduce exposure when we see risk rising, and hold cash when there aren't good opportunities. Managing drawdowns is a core part of how we approach long-term investing, especially for clients close to or in retirement.
Can you help with equity compensation, RSUs, or concentrated stock?
Yes. We work with a lot of high earners who are sitting on heavy positions in their employer's stock. We help build a plan around the vesting schedule, tax bracket impact, and how to diversify the right way over time, often spread across multiple tax years to manage capital gains.
Do you coordinate with my CPA and the rest of my financial plan?
Yes. Your dedicated wealth manager can coordinate directly with your CPA.
What does it cost?
We charge fees based on a percentage of assets under management, with rates decreasing as asset levels increase. SAM does not charge performance-based fees or commissions. The full financial planning is included at no extra cost, most firms charge for this.
Do I have to move everything over?
No. We have some clients who work with multiple managers (though we would prefer to be the only one), some clients who self-manage a portion and give us some. Some who are still working and cannot move their 401(k) to SAM because it's an employer plan. Everyone's situation is unique.
What does the first call look like?
It's a 30-minute portfolio review. You tell us about your situation, what you own, and what your goals are. We walk you through how we'd approach your portfolio, what we'd do differently, and the planning side of it. If we're a fit, we'll discuss next steps. If not, we'll let you know.

What Happens After You Book

Our Process

A clear, structured approach to managing your wealth.

1

Discovery Call

We get on a call, qualify your situation, and confirm you are interested in moving forward.

2

Client Information Sheet

You fill out a brief sheet with basic information: name, email, phone, address, date of birth, marital status, occupation details, and a list of your financial accounts.

3

Account Statements

You provide current account statements so we can see exactly what you own and where everything stands.

4

Wealth Manager Assignment

Your dedicated wealth manager reaches out and begins strategizing your accounts. They analyze what you own, identify gaps and opportunities, and start building your financial plan.

5

Open Accounts

Once your wealth manager has mapped out the strategy, we open your accounts at SAM.

6

Fund & Transfer

Your accounts are funded by transferring assets from wherever they previously were.

7

Ongoing Management

Once the transfers complete, trades are placed according to your strategy. From there, your relationship with us continues on an ongoing basis with regular reviews and adjustments.

Real Scenarios We Help Investors Navigate

Active Portfolio Management

Our investment team researches and hand-picks every position in your portfolio, then actively manages it as market conditions change. No passive set-it-and-forget-it strategies.

Retirement Planning

We build a clear plan around your retirement timeline, income needs, and how your portfolio shifts as you move closer to stepping away from your career.

Equity Compensation Strategy

RSUs, ISOs, ESPP, and concentrated stock positions. We help you plan around the vesting schedule, tax bracket impact, and how to diversify the right way.

Tax Coordination

We coordinate with your CPA on tax-aware investing, capital gains planning, and retirement account sequencing.

Estate & Legacy Planning

We review your full estate plan and work with your estate attorney to make sure your wealth transfers the way you want, including trusts, charitable giving, and beneficiary alignment.

Business Succession Planning

If most of your wealth is tied up in a business, we help plan around the eventual transition: tax strategy, succession structure, and what to do with the capital after the sale.
